14Apr16:00Entangled History of Ukraine: Ukrainian (and East European) Studies

The chair at the EU Viadrina (Frankfurt/Oder) deals with Ukraine’s diverse, controversial and illuminating history, culture and society in interdisciplinary ways. We consider Ukrainian studies as a field with numerous transnational entanglements.

Olesya Khromeychuk (Ukrainian Institute London)
Marina Mogilner (University of Illinois Chicago)
Miloš Řezník (German Historical Institute Warsaw)

The discussion will involve following points:
– The responsibility of existing East European studies in the context of preparation and the outbreak of war.

– The necessity, possibilities and obstacles for ‚de-colonizing‘ terminology, geographic names etc we use when writing about Ukrainian history.

– The role of Ukrainian studies in re-thinking Russian, Polish, Jewish studies.

– What should be done (on both individual and institutional levels) to re-think and develop Ukrainian studies as a field of international academic research.

Moderated by Andrii Portnov (European University Viadrina).
